Psychologist or psychotherapist: who should I see?
The titles are confusing. Here's a plain-language guide to who does what, and how to choose.

Psychologist, psychotherapist, counsellor — the words blur together. The good news: what matters most is the relationship, not the title.
The short version
Psychologists are trained in assessment and evidence-based treatment. Psychotherapists complete long training in a therapeutic approach and their own personal therapy. Many people are both.
How to choose
Ask about training, supervision and how they work. Then notice how you feel in the room. Feeling heard in the first sessions is one of the best predictors of good outcomes.
