Why saying no feels so dangerous
For many of us, 'no' was once risky. Understanding where that came from makes it easier to say today.

If refusing someone makes your heart race, you’re not weak — you’re well-trained. Somewhere along the way, ‘no’ may have cost you closeness, approval or safety.
The old bargain
Children learn quickly which feelings keep adults nearby. Being easy, helpful and agreeable can become a survival strategy that outlives its usefulness.
Starting small
Practise with low stakes: a meeting you can’t attend, a favour you don’t have time for. Notice what happens afterwards. Most relationships bend; very few break.
